Denied Immediate Relief by Delhi High Court in Cheque Bounce Case

Veteran comic actor Rajpal Yadav has hit another legal setback. The Delhi High Court on Thursday refused to grant him immediate suspension of his six-month jail sentence in a long-running cheque dishonour case.

The court noted that despite earlier assurances, the actor repeatedly failed to honour his financial commitments to the complainant company.

Court’s Observation

A single-judge bench of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma observed that Rajpal had acknowledged his debt and promised repayment but did not follow through on the settlement terms.

His legal counsel had sought temporary suspension of the sentence, citing a family wedding as grounds for urgent relief. However, the court remarked that the actor had delayed payments for years and disobeyed the agreed settlement conditions.

The matter will now be heard again on Monday.

How the Case Began

The legal dispute dates back to 2010, when Rajpal borrowed ₹5 crore from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd, a Delhi-based firm, to finance his directorial venture Ata Pata Laapata.

The film, released in 2012, failed at the box office, triggering financial trouble. When repayment cheques bounced, the company initiated legal proceedings under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

In 2018, a magisterial court convicted Rajpal and sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment. The decision was upheld by a sessions court in 2019. With interest and penalties, the outstanding amount reportedly climbed to nearly ₹9 crore.

Emotional Plea in Court

Before surrendering at Tihar Jail earlier this month, Rajpal reportedly made an emotional appeal in court, saying he had no money left and no clear solution to the crisis. His statement reflected the financial strain he claims to be under.

According to his legal team, approximately ₹2 crore remains unpaid and efforts are being made to clear the dues soon.

Industry Support

Following his surrender, several Bollywood personalities expressed solidarity. Sonu Sood publicly offered support, calling Rajpal a gifted performer who has contributed significantly to Indian cinema.

Singers like Mika Singh and film personalities including Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, Varun Dhawan, and David Dhawan reportedly reached out to him privately.

The show of support highlights the goodwill Rajpal has earned over decades of comedic roles in Hindi cinema.

What Happens Next?

For now, Rajpal Yadav remains lodged in Tihar Jail. The Delhi High Court will take up the matter again on Monday, where his plea for interim relief will be reconsidered.

Final Words:
This case is a reminder of how financial disputes, especially involving bounced cheques, can escalate legally over time. While Rajpal enjoys strong backing from the film fraternity, the court has made it clear that compliance with legal commitments remains paramount. The coming hearing will determine whether any temporary relief is possible — or whether the actor must complete his sentence in full.
