Veteran playback singer Udit Narayan has once again landed in controversy after his first wife, Ranjana Narayan Jha, filed a criminal complaint making explosive allegations against him and his family. The complaint, lodged at the Women’s Police Station in Supaul, Bihar on February 10, accuses the singer, his two brothers, and his second wife Deepa Narayan of being part of a criminal conspiracy.
At the heart of the case is a shocking claim — Ranjana alleges that her uterus was surgically removed in 1996 without her knowledge or consent.
The Allegations That Sparked the Case
According to the complaint, Ranjana stated that she was taken to a hospital in Delhi in 1996 under the pretext of medical treatment. She alleges that during that visit, her uterus was removed without her consent. She further claimed that Udit Narayan, his brothers Sanjay Kumar Jha and Lalit Narayan Jha, and Deepa were present during the incident.
Ranjana told media outlets that she discovered the surgery years later during a medical check-up, leaving her “shocked and devastated.”
The Supaul Women’s Police Station has confirmed receiving the complaint. Station in-charge Anju Tiwari told NDTV that the allegations date back nearly three decades and that the matter is currently under investigation. An FIR will be registered based on the findings.
Marriage Timeline and Second Marriage Dispute
Ranjana claims she married Udit Narayan on December 7, 1984, in a traditional Hindu ceremony. According to her, the singer moved to Mumbai in 1985 to pursue his career. She later learned through media reports that he had married Deepa Narayan.
She alleges that whenever she confronted him, he reassured her but never formally ended their marriage. Human rights advocate S.K. Jha has reportedly approached both the National Human Rights Commission and the Bihar Human Rights Commission, arguing that the second marriage violates the Hindu Marriage Act if no legal divorce took place.
Udit Narayan has dismissed the accusations, stating that the case is an attempt to extort money and that facts have been misrepresented.
“I Deserve Justice,” Says Ranjana
Speaking emotionally to reporters, Ranjana said she has been forced to approach authorities after years of waiting for support.
“You all know he makes promises but does not fulfil them. I am constantly unwell and need his support. That is why I have come to the Women’s Police Station. I deserve justice,” she said.
She also alleged that during a 2006 visit to Mumbai, she was abused and denied entry into Udit’s home by him and Deepa. Later, she claimed she was insulted and turned away when she visited her in-laws’ residence in Nepal.
Maintenance Case and Financial Allegations
The dispute is not new. Ranjana had earlier filed a maintenance case. Udit Narayan appeared before the Supaul Family Court on February 21, 2025, but chose to contest rather than settle the matter. He was fined ₹10 for missing a prior hearing scheduled on January 28.
Ranjana has further accused him of abandoning her and withholding ₹18 lakh from the sale of property in Nepal. She also alleged that individuals have been hired to follow and intimidate her whenever she travels to Mumbai to meet him.
Her lawyer, Ajay Kumar, told reporters that Ranjana wishes to live with Udit due to her declining health and age. However, during court proceedings, Udit reportedly declined reconciliation.
What Happens Next?
As of now, the matter remains under investigation. No FIR has been formally registered yet, pending verification of the allegations. Udit Narayan has not issued a detailed public statement addressing the latest claims.
With serious accusations spanning decades — from alleged medical misconduct to questions over marital legality — the case is likely to draw wider attention as legal proceedings unfold.
Final Words:
This is a sensitive and serious matter involving deeply personal and legal issues. While Ranjana has made grave allegations, they remain under investigation. The coming weeks will likely determine how the case progresses — and whether it escalates into a larger legal battle.
