Akshaye Khanna is enjoying a massive wave of appreciation following his striking turn as Rehman Dakait in Dhurandhar. As fans revisit his past interviews, one fascinating Bollywood “what if” has resurfaced — Akshaye Khanna was actually the first choice for Taare Zameen Par, not Aamir Khan.
The 2007 film went on to become one of Hindi cinema’s most emotionally resonant classics and marked Aamir Khan’s directorial debut. But the journey to that casting decision had an unexpected twist.
How Akshaye Khanna Almost Played Ram Shankar Nikumbh
In an interview given to Mid Day several years ago, Akshaye revealed that filmmaker Amole Gupte initially wanted to narrate the script to him, but didn’t know him personally. Since Gupte was friends with Aamir Khan, he approached him instead.
Akshaye recalled that Aamir insisted on hearing the story first before recommending it to anyone else. The plan backfired — in the best possible way.
Once Aamir heard the script, he was so deeply moved that he decided to step in and play the role himself.
Akshaye remembered meeting Aamir on a studio floor later, where the actor candidly admitted, “I didn’t let him come to you. I ended up doing the film myself.” Akshaye’s response was simple and gracious — he was completely fine with it.
‘Aamir Was Perfect for It,’ Says Akshaye
When asked if he felt he had missed out on a career-defining role, Akshaye dismissed the idea entirely. He admitted he didn’t believe he could have done a better job than Aamir, adding that destiny worked exactly as it should have.
His words reflected not just humility, but a deep respect for Aamir’s performance, which went on to define the film’s emotional core.
Aamir Khan Confirms the Story
Aamir Khan later shared his side of the story in an interview with Lallantop. He recalled being surprised that Amole Gupte hadn’t offered him the role directly. Aamir admitted he loved the story instantly and questioned why he wasn’t being considered.
According to Aamir, Gupte simply never imagined that he would want to act in the film — a misunderstanding that ultimately led to one of the most celebrated performances of Aamir’s career.
A Classic That Found the Right Destiny
While it’s fascinating to imagine Akshaye Khanna as the compassionate art teacher Ram Shankar Nikumbh, Taare Zameen Par remains a film where timing, destiny, and creative instinct aligned perfectly.
With Akshaye now being hailed for his intense and layered performances once again, the story serves as a reminder: sometimes, even missed opportunities lead to exactly where an actor is meant to be.
