Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continues to dominate the global box office, but away from its theatrical success, the film has found itself at the centre of an unexpected dispute. A Swedish nonprofit organisation that supplied a historic Viking longship replica for the production has alleged that it is still waiting to be reimbursed for repair costs after the vessel was returned with damage following filming. The claims have surfaced just as the historical epic enjoys a remarkable run in cinemas worldwide.
The disagreement has now drawn attention because of the contrast between the film’s massive commercial performance and the relatively modest amount at the heart of the dispute. While the organisation says it has been left covering repair expenses, Universal Pictures has rejected the allegations and insists all agreed payments have already been made.
Viking Ship Owners Claim Repair Costs Were Never Reimbursed
According to a report by The Guardian, the Vikingaleden association, a nonprofit that preserves and operates Viking longship replicas, provided its vessel Glad av Gillberga for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The ship was reportedly used during production to portray an ancient Greek warship in the film.
Peter Olausson, chair of the Vikingaleden association, said the organisation was initially proud to see its ship become part of a major Hollywood production. However, he claimed that the experience later turned disappointing after the promised reimbursement for repair materials allegedly never arrived. Speaking to The Guardian, Olausson said, “We are only charging for the material cost, not the labour. Of course, Universal can afford this $6,000. We feel forgotten.”
The association alleges that the agreement required it to repair the vessel before seeking reimbursement from the production. Olausson added, “The agreement was that we would fix it and get financially reimbursed.” According to the organisation, more than a year has passed since the ship was used during filming, and although the repairs have been completed and the vessel is once again operational, the unresolved payment issue has overshadowed what was otherwise a memorable collaboration.
Universal Pictures Rejects the Claims
Universal Pictures has strongly disputed the allegations and maintains that all financial obligations related to the vessel have already been settled. Responding to the report, a spokesperson for the studio said, “Our records show that all invoices relating to the Glad av Gillberga were paid in full, including repairs. The studio and the production have contacted the association to clear up any misunderstanding.”
At present, neither side has publicly released documentation detailing the payments, leaving the disagreement unresolved. With both parties presenting conflicting accounts, it remains unclear whether the issue stems from an unpaid invoice or a misunderstanding regarding the reimbursement process.
The dispute comes during an extraordinary box office run for The Odyssey, which has become one of Christopher Nolan’s biggest theatrical successes. Produced on a reported budget of around $250 million, the historical epic opened to approximately $264 million worldwide before maintaining strong momentum throughout the week. The film has now surpassed $300 million globally and continues to move closer to the $400 million milestone, with analysts expecting it to remain one of the strongest performers of the year.
