The Batman Part II Delayed Again to February 2028

Batman fans will have to wait even longer before Robert Pattinson returns to Gotham City. Warner Bros. has officially pushed back The Batman Part II once again, moving the highly anticipated sequel to February 18, 2028. Alongside confirming the new release date, director Matt Reeves also gave fans something to look forward to by sharing the first camera test footage of Pattinson back in the Batsuit.

The latest delay means nearly six years will have passed between the release of The Batman in March 2022 and its sequel. While the extended wait has disappointed many fans, the studio says the additional time will allow Reeves to complete the film’s extensive post-production work before it reaches theatres.

Matt Reeves Shares First Batman Footage

Matt Reeves announced the new release date through social media while unveiling the first camera test footage from the sequel. Although the brief clip doesn’t reveal story details, it offers fans their first official look at Robert Pattinson returning as the Dark Knight since the original film became a global success. The footage has already generated excitement online despite revealing very little about Gotham’s next chapter.

Joining Pattinson in the sequel is an impressive cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Game of Thrones actor Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch. Warner Bros. has not revealed who the new cast members will portray, and plot details continue to remain tightly guarded. Matt Reeves once again co-wrote the screenplay with longtime collaborator Mattson Tomlin.

This is the second major release delay for the film. The Batman Part II was initially scheduled to arrive in theatres on October 2, 2026, before being postponed to October 1, 2027. With the latest announcement, the sequel will now debut on February 18, 2028, extending the production timeline even further.

James Gunn Previously Defended the Delay

When the first postponement was announced, DC Studios co-chair James Gunn defended the longer production schedule by pointing to several blockbuster franchises that also took years between installments. Addressing concerns from fans, Gunn wrote, “To be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels.” He also referenced franchises including Alien, The Incredibles, Terminator, Avatar, Top Gun and Guardians of the Galaxy as examples of successful sequels that arrived after lengthy gaps.

The additional production time is expected to give Reeves more flexibility during post-production, particularly with visual effects and the film’s overall scale. Given the filmmaker’s reputation for meticulous world-building, Warner Bros. appears willing to prioritize quality over rushing the sequel to cinemas. The original The Batman earned widespread praise for its darker detective-focused approach and grossed more than $770 million worldwide, making expectations for the sequel significantly higher.

Warner Bros. Reshuffles Its Release Calendar

The latest delay has also triggered several changes across Warner Bros.’ upcoming release schedule. J.J. Abrams’ mystery project, The Great Beyond, starring Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega, has moved from November 13, 2026 to October 1, 2027, taking over the date previously reserved for The Batman Part II. Warner Bros. has described the film as “a four-quadrant, all-audience spectacle,” although story details remain under wraps.

Elsewhere, Sam Esmail’s thriller Panic Carefully, starring Julia Roberts, has shifted to April 9, 2027, while Revenge of La Llorona will now occupy the February 2027 release window. Warner Bros. also confirmed that The Great Beyond will receive an IMAX 70mm rollout, a move made possible by its revised release schedule, allowing additional time to prepare premium-format prints.

For Batman fans, however, the biggest takeaway remains Robert Pattinson’s long-awaited return. While the wait until 2028 is undoubtedly longer than expected, Matt Reeves’ first footage suggests the next chapter is finally moving forward. Until Warner Bros. reveals a full trailer and official plot details, the latest camera test will have to keep Gotham fans excited for what’s still to come.
