What was meant to be one of the most private moments of Aamir Khan’s life has unexpectedly turned into a public debate. Just days after quietly marrying longtime partner Gauri Spratt, the actor has broken his silence on the criticism surrounding their wedding. Rather than avoiding the controversy, Aamir chose to respond directly, explaining why the allegations being made against his marriage simply do not reflect his family’s reality.
The wedding itself was deliberately kept away from the spotlight. Held on July 5 at Aamir’s Pali Hill residence in Mumbai, the ceremony took place under the Special Marriage Act in the presence of close family members and friends. Around 150 guests attended the intimate celebration, including Aamir’s children Junaid, Ira and Azad, along with Gauri’s son.
Aamir Responds to Criticism Over His Marriage
Soon after news of the wedding became public, the marriage drew reactions from different quarters. Maharashtra BJP minister Nitesh Rane described the union as an example of “love jihad” and urged Hindu society to reflect on such personal choices made by public figures. Around the same time, Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta, reportedly issued a fatwa, stating that under Sharia law a Muslim man cannot marry a non-Muslim woman unless she converts to Islam.
Responding to the controversy during an interview with Rediff, Aamir rejected the claims by pointing to his own family’s long history of interfaith marriages. He said, “The truth is that ours is a very inclusive family. Both my sisters are married to Hindus; my daughter is also married to a Hindu. My cousin Mansoor is married to a Christian.” The actor’s comments highlighted that interfaith relationships have never been unusual within his family.
Aamir also clarified that none of the women he has married ever converted to Islam because each of his marriages was legally registered as a civil marriage. Addressing speculation surrounding Gauri Spratt’s faith, he said, “Neither Gauri, Kiran nor Reena converted their religion, as we had civil marriages. Gauri is not even Hindu, she is Christian, and not even a practising Christian at that. Life is getting more comical as time passes.” His statement quickly gained attention online as people continued discussing the controversy.
A Private Wedding After a Long Friendship
Aamir first confirmed his relationship with Gauri Spratt earlier this year during celebrations around his 60th birthday. At the time, the actor revealed that the two had known each other for nearly 25 years before reconnecting later in life. Their friendship eventually developed into a relationship, which they chose to keep away from the public eye until they were ready to speak about it.
Unlike many high-profile celebrity weddings, Aamir and Gauri opted for a simple ceremony attended only by their closest family and friends. The event remained largely private, with very few details emerging immediately after the wedding. Despite the couple’s efforts to keep the occasion intimate, the marriage soon became the subject of political and religious debate, drawing attention far beyond the wedding itself.
While reactions to the marriage continue to circulate across television debates and social media, Aamir’s latest comments make his position clear. The actor has emphasised that his family has always respected personal choice and that all of his marriages have been conducted under India’s civil marriage laws. For now, neither Gauri Spratt nor other members of the family have publicly commented on the controversy following Aamir’s response.
