After spending several years away from cinemas, Hotel Transylvania is officially making its way back to the big screen. Sony Pictures Animation has announced the fifth chapter in the blockbuster animated franchise, The Haunting of Hotel Transylvania, with a theatrical release locked in for October 8. The new adventure promises another supernatural mystery while bringing back Dracula, Mavis and the rest of the fan-favorite monster family that audiences have followed for more than a decade.
Unlike the previous film, which debuted exclusively on streaming, the latest installment is heading back to theaters. Sony Pictures will distribute the movie across North America, while Amazon MGM Studios will handle its international release, marking a new partnership for one of animation’s most successful family franchises.
### Dracula’s Hotel Faces a New Mystery
The upcoming film takes the story into a different phase of Dracula’s life. Having finally stepped away from running the famous monster hotel, Dracula is now enjoying retirement while his daughter, Mavis, takes over the day-to-day responsibilities of the legendary resort. Things appear peaceful at first, but that calm doesn’t last for long.
According to the official story details, a string of eerie and unexplained incidents begins unsettling guests inside the hotel. As strange events continue to unfold, Dracula reunites with the Drac Pack to investigate the mystery behind The Haunting of Hotel Transylvania, setting up what the studio describes as the franchise’s most magical adventure yet.
Jennifer Kluska and Alan Hawkins are directing the fifth film, while Lawrence Jonas serves as producer. Franchise creator Genndy Tartakovsky and longtime producer Michelle Murdocca return as executive producers, ensuring familiar creative voices remain involved as the series enters its next chapter.
### Studios Celebrate the Franchise’s Return
Announcing the new sequel, Sony Pictures Animation Presidents Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville reflected on what the series has meant to audiences over the years. They said, “From the beginning, ‘Hotel Transylvania’ has invited audiences into a world where monsters feel like family.”
They continued, “These films have been a cornerstone of Sony Animation’s storytelling identity, blending a unique visual style with heartfelt, character-driven comedy. With this next installment, we’re honoring that legacy of heart and humor while delivering the unexpected surprises audiences love. We’re delighted to partner with Amazon MGM Studios to bring the Drac Pack back to theatres for families around the world.”
Amazon MGM Studios also welcomed the collaboration. Courtenay Valenti, Head of Film at Amazon MGM Studios, said, “‘Hotel Transylvania’ is one of those rare franchises that has become a beloved tradition for families around the world – a film series that has always balanced irreverent humor with genuine heart.” She added, “We’re thrilled to collaborate with Sony Pictures Animation to bring the Drac Pack back to the big screen and continue this legacy of inventive, character-driven storytelling that audiences have embraced for over a decade.”
### A Franchise That Continues to Grow
The Hotel Transylvania series first arrived in theaters in 2012 and quickly became one of Sony Pictures Animation’s biggest global successes. The original movie earned around $355 million worldwide, introducing audiences to a monster-filled world led by Count Dracula and his unconventional family. Its blend of comedy, emotional storytelling and colorful animation helped turn the film into a long-running franchise.
The success continued with Hotel Transylvania 2, which collected roughly $475 million globally, followed by Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, the highest-grossing film in the series with more than $530 million at the worldwide box office. The fourth movie, Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, skipped theaters because of the pandemic-era release strategy and premiered exclusively on Prime Video in 2022.
Bringing the fifth installment back to cinemas signals renewed confidence in the franchise’s theatrical appeal. Family animation has continued to perform strongly at the global box office over the past few years, and Sony appears eager to reunite audiences with one of its most recognizable animated brands. With a spooky mystery, familiar characters and a return to theaters, The Haunting of Hotel Transylvania will be looking to continue a franchise that has entertained families for more than 13 years.
