Sony’s upcoming adaptation of “Helldivers” has hit an unexpected roadblock. Jason Momoa, who was previously announced as one of the major stars attached to the project earlier this year, is no longer involved with the sci-fi action film. The departure comes months after excitement started building around the PlayStation adaptation, leaving fans wondering what exactly happened behind the scenes.
No official explanation has been provided for Momoa’s exit. Sony Pictures has also remained tight-lipped about whether the split was due to scheduling conflicts, creative differences, or another reason entirely. What is clear, however, is that the studio has already shifted gears and begun searching for a replacement, while also continuing its hunt for additional cast members to round out the ensemble.
A Major Shake-Up for One of Sony’s Big Gaming Bets
The loss of a high-profile name like Momoa arrives at an important stage for the project. “Helldivers” remains one of Sony and PlayStation Productions’ notable upcoming video game adaptations, particularly as Hollywood continues leaning heavily into gaming properties with built-in fanbases.
Directed by Justin Lin, best known for steering several entries in the “Fast & Furious” franchise, the film is still moving forward toward its planned theatrical release on Nov. 10, 2027. Despite the casting shake-up, there has been no indication that production timelines have changed.
Based on the popular franchise from Arrowhead Game Studios, “Helldivers” throws audiences into a futuristic war where survival depends on cooperation, strategy and overwhelming firepower. The story centers around an elite military force known as the Helldivers, soldiers tasked with defending the fictional planet of Super Earth from deadly alien threats determined to wipe out humanity.
Specific plot details remain under wraps, and Sony has yet to reveal how closely the film will follow the events of the games. That secrecy has only fueled curiosity among longtime fans eager to see how the chaotic battlefield experience translates to the big screen.
Why ‘Helldivers’ Could Be Sony’s Next Gaming Success
The “Helldivers” brand may not have the decades-long mainstream recognition of some other gaming franchises, but its momentum has grown rapidly over the past few years.
The original game debuted in 2015 and earned praise for its challenging cooperative gameplay and satirical take on militaristic propaganda. However, it was the release of “Helldivers 2” that pushed the franchise into an entirely different league. The sequel exploded in popularity, becoming one of PlayStation’s biggest multiplayer success stories and introducing millions of new players to the world of Super Earth.
That popularity gives Sony a valuable opportunity. The studio has already proven it can find success adapting video game properties when the approach connects with audiences.
The 2022 film “Uncharted,” starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, grossed $407 million worldwide despite mixed critical reactions. Television has delivered even stronger results. Peacock’s “Twisted Metal” found a loyal audience through its blend of dark humor and action, while HBO’s “The Last of Us” became both a ratings powerhouse and an awards contender, raising expectations for what game adaptations can achieve creatively.
With “Helldivers,” Sony appears to be chasing something different altogether — a large-scale sci-fi action spectacle that could potentially launch an ongoing franchise if audiences respond.
Jason Momoa Isn’t Slowing Down Anytime Soon
Even though “Helldivers” is no longer on his schedule, Momoa remains one of Hollywood’s busiest stars.
The actor has a packed slate of projects stretching across several major studios and franchises. He is set to return in “A Minecraft Movie: Squared,” following the commercial success of the first installment. He’s also attached to the live action-animation hybrid “Animal Friends,” along with projects titled “Fast Forever” and “Protecting Jared.”
Fans of video game adaptations won’t have to wait long to see him back in familiar territory either. This year, Momoa is expected to appear in Paramount and Legendary’s “Street Fighter,” taking on the role of the feral and fan-favorite fighter Blanka.
His return to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi universe in “Dune: Part 3” has also generated considerable excitement, particularly because Duncan Idaho’s future became one of the most discussed topics among readers of Frank Herbert’s novels. Meanwhile, comic book fans are eager to watch him embrace another iconic character when he steps into the role of the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in “Supergirl.”
As for “Helldivers,” Sony’s immediate challenge is finding a new face capable of leading a project that now carries even greater expectations. Replacing a recognizable star this early in development is far from impossible, especially with more than a year before cameras are expected to roll in full force.
The bigger question is whether the eventual casting choice can capture the same larger-than-life energy needed for a property built around explosive battles, dark comedy and relentless alien warfare. One actor may have left the battlefield, but Sony clearly isn’t retreating from its plans to turn “Helldivers” into its next big-screen gaming franchise.
