In a move that might disappoint fans of one of the most iconic teen films ever, the planned sequel series to Clueless is no longer moving forward at Peacock. The show, which had Alicia Silverstone set to return as Cher Horowitz, was first announced in 2025 and had quietly been in development since then. Now, it’s been shelved at the streamer — but not completely dead.
Sources suggest that while Peacock has stepped away, the project still has strong backing from CBS Studios and Paramount, who remain confident about its potential. That means the series is likely to be pitched again to other platforms, where it could find a new home. Given the enduring popularity of the original film, there’s a good chance it will attract attention once it re-enters the market.
The concept itself had plenty going for it. The show was expected to revisit Cher’s life years after the events of the 1995 classic, offering a fresh look at a character that defined an era of pop culture. While plot details were mostly kept under wraps, the idea of seeing an older, evolved Cher had already sparked curiosity among fans.
Behind the scenes, the creative team also added credibility. Writers and producers like Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage — known for character-driven shows — were attached, along with Jordan Weiss. Silverstone herself was not just acting but also executive producing, alongside original film creators Amy Heckerling and Robert Lawrence, which suggested the series aimed to stay true to its roots.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time a Clueless revival has struggled to take off. A previous attempt in 2020, which would have focused on Dionne, never made it past development either. It seems like studios recognize the value of the IP, but finding the right angle — and platform — has been tricky.
The original Clueless remains a cultural landmark, loosely inspired by Emma and remembered for its sharp humor, fashion influence, and memorable characters. Alongside Silverstone, the film featured actors like Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, and Brittany Murphy, helping it become a defining film of the ’90s. It even spawned a TV adaptation that ran for three seasons in the late 1990s, proving its long-standing appeal.
As for Peacock, the decision reflects a broader pattern. The streamer hasn’t been aggressively expanding its scripted slate recently, focusing instead on a smaller lineup that includes shows like Twisted Metal and upcoming projects like Crystal Lake. That shift may have played a role in why Clueless didn’t make the cut this time.
For now, the sequel series sits in limbo — not cancelled in spirit, but without a platform. And honestly, given how strong nostalgia-driven content performs today, it wouldn’t be surprising if Cher Horowitz finds her way back onto screens sooner rather than later.
