Just days after hitting theatres, The Kerala Story 2 has found itself at the centre of another legal twist — this time over piracy concerns.
On March 3, the Madras High Court stepped in to prevent any unlawful online or cable broadcasting of the film, offering temporary relief to the makers who feared copyright violations soon after release.
⚖️ Court Steps In to Protect Copyright
The interim order was passed by Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy following petitions filed by Sunshine Pictures Limited, the production banner backing the film. The producers approached the court apprehending possible illegal streaming and cable telecasts that could damage the film’s theatrical run.
As proof of ownership, the producers submitted the CBFC certificate identifying them as the official copyright holders.
The court observed that in such matters, any delay in action could lead to “irreversible injury,” especially when piracy spreads rapidly in the initial days of release. At the same time, the court noted that legitimate business interests of some parties could be impacted due to the wide scope of the order. As a safeguard, the plaintiff has been directed to provide indemnity if required.
An ad interim injunction has now been granted until March 23, 2026, with further hearings scheduled.
🎬 A Film Surrounded by Legal Hurdles
Directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the sequel released in theatres on February 28 — but not without drama.
Before its theatrical debut, the film briefly faced a stay order from the Kerala High Court, which led to last-minute uncertainty and temporary withdrawal from cinemas. A division bench later lifted the stay, clearing the way for its release.
The film’s subject matter — revolving around three young women allegedly drawn into deceptive marriages and forced religious conversions — has once again triggered political criticism in Kerala. Several political leaders have labelled the film as propaganda, reigniting debates similar to those that surrounded the first installment.
📊 Box Office Performance So Far
Despite the turbulence, the film has managed to attract audiences in its opening weekend.
In its first three days, The Kerala Story 2 collected approximately ₹11.35 crore nett in India. However, early weekday trends indicate a dip in collections, with earnings reportedly falling below ₹2 crore on its first Monday.
Whether the controversy fuels curiosity or impacts long-term performance remains to be seen.
🎭 Cast and Production Details
The film features performances by Ulka Gupta, Aditi Bhatia, Aishwarya Ojha, Arjan Singh Aujla, and Yuktam Kholsa. Much like its predecessor, the sequel aims to present a hard-hitting narrative, blending political commentary with emotional storytelling.
The original The Kerala Story had generated nationwide discussion upon release, becoming one of the most polarising Hindi films in recent years. The sequel appears to be walking a similar path — both commercially and politically.
📝 Final Words
For now, the spotlight isn’t just on the film’s content — but also on its courtroom battles.
With the Madras High Court stepping in to prevent unlawful broadcasts, the makers have secured temporary protection during a crucial theatrical window. But between legal scrutiny, political backlash, and box office pressure, The Kerala Story 2 continues to be as controversial off-screen as it is on-screen.
And as always in Bollywood, sometimes the drama outside the theatre can be just as intense as what unfolds inside it.
