Kajol Breaks Silence on No-Kissing Rule, Calls It a ‘Professional Choice’ for The Trial

After decades of staying consistent with her on-screen boundaries, Kajol surprised many when she broke her long-held no-kissing policy in The Trial – Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha. Now, the actor has finally opened up about that decision — and her explanation feels less about change, and more about conviction in storytelling.

Speaking on Lilly Singh’s podcast, Kajol explained that the moment wasn’t included just for effect or shock value. For her, it was deeply tied to the character she was playing — Noyonika Sengupta. She made it clear that the scene wasn’t “just a kiss,” but part of a larger emotional arc that reflected what the character believed, felt, and struggled with. Removing it, she said, would have meant removing an essential layer of the character itself.

That perspective gives a bit more context to the decision. Kajol has always been known for being selective about what she does on screen, so stepping outside a long-standing personal rule wasn’t casual. It came from a place of wanting the story to feel complete, rather than incomplete or diluted.

Interestingly, she also admitted that the decision wasn’t easy at all. Despite understanding its importance in the script, she was uncomfortable right up until the moment of shooting. She even considered backing out while on set, unsure if she would go through with it. But eventually, she chose to trust the process and treat it as a professional call — something she felt ready to do at that point in her career.

The moment itself was shared with co-actor Jisshu Sengupta, and it became one of the most talked-about aspects of the show when it released. But beyond the buzz, Kajol’s explanation shifts the focus back to performance and character depth rather than just the act itself.

What also stands out is how Kajol described her approach to choices over the years. She spoke about being unapologetic, even from the beginning of her career, often making decisions based on instinct rather than overthinking consequences. That honesty, she admitted, sometimes got her into trouble, but it also helped her stay true to her work.

The Trial, directed by Suparn Verma, marked Kajol’s OTT debut and was an Indian adaptation of The Good Wife. The series follows a housewife who returns to her legal career after her husband’s scandal, navigating both personal and professional upheaval. Alongside Kajol and Jisshu, the show also featured Alyy Khan and Sheeba Chaddha.

Looking at it now, the decision feels less like a dramatic shift and more like a natural evolution. Kajol didn’t abandon her principles — she adapted them to fit a role that demanded more emotional honesty. And in doing so, she reminded audiences that sometimes, it’s not about breaking a rule, but understanding why it exists in the first place.
