In a proud moment for Indian cinema, the Manipuri-language film Boong is gearing up for a theatrical re-release after making history on the global stage. Directed by debutant Lakshmipriya Devi, the film recently clinched a major win at the BAFTA Film Awards — becoming the first Indian film ever to take home a BAFTA in its category.
Now, audiences across India will get another chance to experience the heartfelt drama when it returns to cinemas on March 6.
From Global Glory to Indian Screens
The announcement was shared by actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar, whose banner Excel Entertainment has backed the film. Taking to X, he described Boong as “a journey of innocence, love and resilience,” inviting audiences to witness India’s first BAFTA-winning film in theatres once again.
The film had originally released in select Indian cities on September 19 last year through PVR INOX. However, its latest international recognition has sparked fresh excitement — and a wider curiosity among viewers who may have missed it the first time.
The BAFTA Breakthrough
At the 79th BAFTA Film Awards held at London’s Royal Festival Hall on February 22, Boong won the Best Children’s & Family Film award. It stood alongside international titles like Arco, Lilo & Stitch, and Zootropolis 2 — and emerged victorious.
Notably, it was the only Indian film nominated at this year’s BAFTAs, making its win even more significant.
For Indian regional cinema — especially films from the Northeast — this victory marks a major milestone. Manipuri-language films rarely receive mainstream distribution, let alone global awards recognition.
A Story Rooted in Emotion
At its heart, Boong tells a deeply personal and universally relatable story.
The film follows a young boy living in a small Manipuri village with his single mother. They are haunted by the unexplained disappearance of his father, Joykumar, who had once left town for work and never returned. Is he gone forever? Or did he walk away?
Determined to give his mother “the best gift ever,” the young boy sets out with his best friend to search for his missing father — a journey filled with innocence, hope, and quiet resilience.
The film stars Gugun Kingpin and Bala Hijam in key roles, delivering performances that critics have described as tender and authentic.
Festival Journey & Production Backing
Before its BAFTA triumph, Boong had already built a strong festival presence. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024 and later screened at the International Film Festival of India and the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.
The film is produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment in collaboration with Chalkboard Entertainment and Suitable Pictures.
Speaking earlier about shooting in Manipur, producer Shujaat Saudagar highlighted how the story connects universally. He noted that while the setting may be specific, the emotional core — seen through a child’s perspective — makes it resonate across borders.
Why This Re-Release Matters
In an industry often dominated by big-budget spectacles and franchise films, Boong stands out as a quiet, emotionally driven narrative.
Its return to theatres isn’t just about celebrating an award — it’s about spotlighting regional voices, children-led storytelling, and cinema that travels beyond language barriers.
Final Words
With its BAFTA win and powerful emotional core, Boong has already etched its name in history. Now, as it heads back to Indian theatres on March 6, the film gets a second life — and perhaps a much larger audience.
For those who believe small stories can carry big emotions, this is one journey worth taking.
