Focker In-Law Trailer Brings De Niro, Stiller Back as Ariana Grande Joins Chaos

Universal Pictures

The Meet the Parents universe is officially back—and this time, it’s louder, younger, and a lot more unpredictable. At CinemaCon, Universal unveiled the first look at Focker In-Law, bringing Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller back into their iconic clash of egos—with Ariana Grande stepping right into the middle of it.

The upcoming sequel, set for a November 27 theatrical release, leans heavily into nostalgia while shaking things up with new energy. Familiar faces like Owen Wilson, Blythe Danner, and Teri Polo return, but it’s the fresh additions—especially Grande and Beanie Feldstein—that instantly stand out.

The trailer wastes no time reminding fans why this franchise clicked in the first place. It opens with De Niro’s famously intimidating lie detector test—only this time, Grande is in the hot seat. The callback lands perfectly, but what follows is pure escalation. Her character casually reveals she was an FBI hostage negotiator, flipping expectations and setting the tone for what looks like a more chaotic, unpredictable story.

The core conflict now shifts to the next generation. Skyler Gisondo plays the son of Stiller and Polo’s characters, who plans to propose to Grande’s character—much to Stiller’s growing suspicion. That familiar “approval anxiety” is back, but with a sharper, more modern twist.

On stage, Stiller leaned into the nostalgia, joking about the franchise taking a “very intentional 15-year break.” He even compared himself to De Niro’s age during the original Meet the Parents, calling himself the “new De Niro”—a line that immediately set up a playful back-and-forth when De Niro walked on stage to shut that idea down.

That chemistry still feels intact, and the trailer builds around it. From awkward family bonding moments—like a coordinated bike ride in matching outfits—to sudden slapstick mishaps, the tone stays true to the franchise’s mix of cringe comedy and family tension.

Behind the scenes, John Hamburg—who co-wrote the earlier films—returns as director, giving this sequel a sense of continuity. The original trilogy, especially Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers, was a massive box office force, collectively pulling in hundreds of millions globally and becoming one of the defining comedy franchises of the 2000s.

What’s interesting here is the timing. Hollywood has been leaning heavily on revivals and legacy sequels, but Focker In-Law seems aware of that—and is clearly trying to evolve rather than just repeat. Casting Ariana Grande, who recently earned serious acting attention, signals that the film wants to connect with a newer audience while keeping its original fanbase intact.

The big question now is whether that balance will work.

Because if the trailer is anything to go by, Focker In-Law isn’t just revisiting old jokes—it’s testing whether this family dynamic still has enough bite to land in today’s audience landscape.
