With a musical lineage that includes legends like Madonna, Adele, Sam Smith, Billie Eilish, and Paul McCartney, the James Bond theme song has long been one of pop music’s most exclusive clubs. But Charli xcx isn’t quite ready to put her name forward for the 007 universe.
The three-time Grammy winner recently addressed the idea while speaking on SiriusXM’s The Julia Cunningham Show, and her answer was refreshingly candid.
“I Don’t Think I’m Built for That”
Asked whether she’d ever want to record a Bond theme, Charli didn’t hesitate to express her doubts.
She admitted that her heavily stylised vocal approach — including her frequent use of AutoTune — might clash with the traditional sound associated with James Bond title tracks. While she didn’t completely shut the door on the idea, she was clear-eyed about the reality of it happening.
Still, in true Charli fashion, she added a playful twist, jokingly calling out to longtime Bond producer Barbara Broccoli with a cheeky “Barbara, call me.”
A Franchise in Transition
Charli’s comments arrive at a time when the Bond franchise itself is undergoing a major reset. Amazon MGM Studios is now steering the future of 007, with Denis Villeneuve officially on board to direct the next installment.
The screenplay is being written by Steven Knight, while longtime producers Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson remain attached. Tanya Lapointe will serve as executive producer.
As for who will replace Daniel Craig as the iconic spy, the studio is still keeping that secret under lock and key.
Charli’s Film Era Is Just Getting Started
Even without Bond in the picture, Charli xcx is firmly planted in the film world right now. She recently composed the soundtrack for Wuthering Heights, directed by Emerald Fennell, and enjoyed a busy Sundance run with multiple projects.
Her meta mockumentary The Moment premiered at the festival, alongside appearances in I Want Your Sex and The Gallerist — signaling a clear crossover moment between pop stardom and cinema.
Final Words
Charli xcx may not see herself as a natural fit for a James Bond theme — at least right now — but her honesty only reinforces what makes her stand out. She’s not chasing legacy boxes to tick or traditions to follow. Instead, she’s carving her own lane, even as Hollywood increasingly comes knocking.
Bond or no Bond, Charli’s creative world keeps expanding — just on her own terms.
