She wasn’t physically there — but her presence was deeply felt.
As At the Sea made its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, Amy Adams sent a heartfelt message expressing her pride in the film and gratitude to the festival for supporting independent cinema.
Director Kornél Mundruczó opened the press conference by reading Adams’ note aloud, setting an emotional tone before the screening.
“Family Is at the Heart of This Film”
In her message, Adams thanked the Berlin Film Festival for championing independent storytelling and apologized for not being able to attend the premiere in person.
She described the experience of making the film as deeply moving and praised her co-stars, including Murray Bartlett, Brett Goldstein, Chloe East, Dan Levy, Jenny Slate, and Rainn Wilson.
She emphasized that the story revolves around themes of intimacy, accountability, and legacy — and said exploring a character at a moral crossroads was a gift.
According to Adams, the journey of “brutal honesty” required to move forward is something she hopes audiences will feel in every frame.
Inside At the Sea
In the film, Adams plays Laura — a woman returning to her family’s Cape Cod home after completing rehab. Once defined by her late father’s prestigious dance company, Laura must now confront addiction, fractured relationships, and the question of who she is without the legacy that once shaped her identity.
Her husband Martin greets her cautiously, their daughter Josie responds with hostility, and their son Felix keeps his distance. Over a few tense days by the sea, buried resentment and financial strain surface, forcing the family to confront painful truths.
Mundruczó, best known for Pieces of a Woman, praised Adams’ performance as “unbelievably brave,” highlighting her willingness to deliver a raw and emotionally fearless portrayal.
Awards Buzz Already Building
Adams, a six-time Oscar nominee, is already generating early awards chatter for her role in At the Sea.
The actress most recently appeared in the dark comedy horror Nightbitch and will next star in Klara and the Sun, directed by Taika Waititi, alongside Jenna Ortega. She also has an undisclosed role in Star Wars: Starfighter, led by Ryan Gosling.
Final Words
Even in absence, Amy Adams made it clear how personal At the Sea is to her.
With its intimate family drama and emotionally exposed central performance, the film has already positioned itself as one of Berlin’s most talked-about premieres.
And if early reactions are any indication, Adams’ “brutal honesty” might once again put her firmly in the awards conversation.
