For many viewers, Ali Asgar as ‘Dadi’ wasn’t just a character — it was a whole vibe. Loud, funny, unpredictable… and honestly, one of the biggest highlights of Comedy Nights with Kapil and later The Kapil Sharma Show.
But behind all that laughter, there was a side people didn’t really see. And now, Ali has finally opened up about why he had to step away from those roles — even when they were making him massively popular.
When Fame Started Affecting His Family
In a recent chat with Maniesh Paul, Ali didn’t sugarcoat things.
He shared that his kids were getting bullied in school because he kept playing female characters on TV. What started as comedy for the audience slowly became something uncomfortable at home.
He even compared it to that iconic moment from Deewaar, where Amitabh Bachchan’s character has “Mera baap chor hai” written on his hand.
Ali said he feared something similar — that his son might face something like “Mera baap aurat hai.”
You can joke about roles, but when it reaches your kids like that… it hits differently.
Getting Stuck in One Image
The bigger issue wasn’t just trolling or bullying. It was also how the industry started seeing him.
Ali explained how he kept getting pushed into the same kind of roles again and again. Whether it was weekend comedy shows or stage acts — he was almost always asked to dress up as a female character.
At first, it worked. People loved it.
But after a point, it became repetitive. Almost like he had no choice.
He described it in a very simple way — imagine eating dal-chawal every single day. Even if you like it, you’ll eventually want something else. That’s exactly how he felt creatively.
He wanted to try different characters, different shades. But writers and makers kept going back to the same formula because it was easy and safe.
Success That Slowly Turned Limiting
What’s interesting is — Ali admits that phase gave him fame, recognition, and even awards. It wasn’t a failure story at all.
In fact, everything he did was working.
But sometimes, success also traps you.
That “Dadi” image became so strong that people stopped seeing him beyond it. And for an actor, that can feel suffocating.
He made it clear — it wasn’t like he had full control either. Television doesn’t always give actors that freedom. You go with the flow, especially when it’s your livelihood.
The Exit That Felt Necessary
Ali eventually walked away from The Kapil Sharma Show back in 2017, citing creative differences at the time.
Now, hearing his side more openly, it feels like that decision was building up for a while — not just professionally, but personally too.
Family pressure, creative frustration, and being typecast… all of it combined.
More Than Just ‘Dadi’
It’s easy to forget, but Ali Asgar’s career goes beyond comedy sketches.
He’s been part of shows like Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii and films like Partner, Tees Maar Khan, Judwaa 2, and Shehzada.
That range often gets overshadowed because one character became too iconic.
Why This Story Actually Matters
This isn’t just about one actor leaving a role.
It’s about how quickly audiences (and even the industry) lock someone into one image — and how hard it is to break out of it.
Ali’s story shows the other side of comedy fame. The part where success comes with a cost you didn’t really expect.
And sometimes, stepping away isn’t about quitting…
It’s about protecting your space — and your family — before things go too far.
