Intro: Legal Storm Clears Just Days Before Release

With just days to go before its theatrical debut, O Romeo found itself in the middle of a legal battle. But now, the road is clear.

A Mumbai civil court has refused to stall the release of Vishal Bhardwaj’s upcoming gangster drama, starring Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri in lead roles. The ruling comes as a significant relief for the makers just ahead of its February 13 release.

What Was the Case About?

The lawsuit was filed by Sanober Shaikh, daughter of late gangster Hussain Shaikh, also known as Hussain Ustara. She alleged that O Romeo was based on her father’s life and claimed that the filmmakers did not seek consent from the family.

Her civil suit named producer Sajid Nadiadwala, director Vishal Bhardwaj, and author Hussain Zaidi. She sought an injunction to halt the film’s release.

However, the court was not convinced.

Court’s Observation: No Case for Injunction

In its order, the court stated that the plaintiff failed to establish grounds strong enough for an interim stay. Civil Judge H C Shende noted that Sanober had earlier demanded monetary compensation — reportedly between ₹1 crore and ₹5 crore — in notices sent to the makers before filing the suit.

The defence argued that this suggested the grievance was monetary rather than reputational.

The court also pointed out that the suit was filed close to the film’s release date, despite the plaintiff being aware of the project earlier. Additionally, the judge declined a request for pre-screening, stating that it would amount to judicial censorship — something not permissible under established legal principles.

Sanober’s legal team has indicated that they plan to challenge the decision in the Bombay High Court.

Makers Maintain It’s Fiction

The film’s legal representatives maintained that O Romeo is a “pure work of fiction” and includes appropriate disclaimers. The defence team emphasized that no real-life individual has been officially depicted in the narrative.

With the interim relief denied, the film is now free to hit theatres as scheduled.

About O Romeo

O Romeo marks Vishal Bhardwaj’s third collaboration with Shahid Kapoor after Kaminey and Haider — a creative partnership that has previously delivered critically acclaimed performances.

The teaser suggests a stylized gangster saga packed with violence, romance, and emotional turmoil. Shahid plays a gunman at the center of the narrative, while Triptii Dimri appears in a pivotal role.

The ensemble cast also includes Avinash Tiwary, Farida Jalal, Vikrant Massey, Nana Patekar, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Disha Patani — giving the film both star power and dramatic depth.

What Worked: Timely Legal Relief

For the makers, the court’s refusal to stall the release removes a major last-minute hurdle. Legal disputes close to release dates often dent momentum — but this verdict ensures that the promotional push continues uninterrupted.

What Didn’t: Pre-Release Controversy

Even though the injunction was denied, the legal tussle has inevitably added controversy to the film’s pre-release buzz. Whether that translates into curiosity-driven footfall remains to be seen.

Final Words

With the legal cloud temporarily lifted, O Romeo is now set to face its real test — the audience. Vishal Bhardwaj and Shahid Kapoor’s past collaborations have set high expectations, and the gangster genre always carries intrigue.

Come February 13, the verdict will shift from the courtroom to the box office.
