Chad Ollinger, a familiar face to Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch viewers, is now facing a murder charge following the death of his cellmate at a Las Vegas jail. The 41-year-old reality TV personality, who has appeared across five seasons of the Discovery Channel series, has been rebooked on an open murder charge — meaning prosecutors will later decide whether it qualifies as first- or second-degree murder.
What Happened Inside the Jail
According to authorities, the incident occurred on the night of December 26 at the Clark County Detention Center. During routine checks, corrections officers reportedly found an inmate lying motionless inside a shared cell.
Officers entered the cell and observed that the inmate appeared to have suffered blunt force injuries. Emergency medical help was called, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deceased has since been identified by the Clark County Coroner’s Office as Christopher Kelly, 42.
Ollinger, who was sharing the cell with Kelly, was taken into custody immediately. Investigators later determined that a physical altercation had taken place between the two men, prompting police to rebook Ollinger on the open murder charge. The case remains under active investigation by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Section.
Why Ollinger Was Already in Custody
Ollinger had been jailed since October, initially on charges linked to contempt of court. He was arrested in Nevada after being identified as a fugitive sought by another state.
Court records indicate he had been sentenced on the contempt charge earlier this month and was scheduled for release in January 2026 — a date that is now irrelevant following the new development.
He is currently being held without bond, with his next court hearing set for December 30.
From TV Adventurer to Legal Trouble
Over the years, Ollinger became one of the most recognisable figures on Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch, a docu-reality series that follows him and his father Duane Ollinger as they search for what they believe could be billions of dollars worth of lost Aztec gold hidden beneath their Utah property.
The show leans heavily into high-risk exploration, underground caves, flooded tunnels, and theories involving lost civilizations, government cover-ups, and unexplained phenomena. Ollinger, known for his dreadlocks and fearless persona, was often portrayed as the show’s primary risk-taker.
His father has recently stepped back from active exploration due to health issues.
A History of Run-Ins With the Law
While this is by far the most serious charge Ollinger has faced, it’s not his first legal issue. In 2024, he was charged with evading arrest following a motorcycle chase in Texas and later cited for driving with an invalid license.
Those incidents, however, pale in comparison to the gravity of the current allegations.
What Happens Next
Because the charge is listed as open murder, prosecutors will decide the final classification as the investigation continues. For now, Ollinger remains behind bars as detectives piece together what led to the fatal confrontation inside the jail cell.
The case has sent shockwaves through the reality TV community, marking a dramatic and troubling turn for a figure once known primarily for underground adventures on television.
