Malayalam cinema legend Mohanlal is mourning the loss of his mother, Shanthakumari, who passed away on Tuesday, December 30, at the age of 90. She breathed her last at her residence in Elamakkara, Kochi, following a prolonged period of illness.
According to medical authorities, Shanthakumari had been undergoing treatment for neurological issues at Amrita Hospital, where doctors confirmed her death. Mohanlal was in Kochi at the time and rushed to her home as soon as he received the news.
A Life Rooted in Quiet Strength
A native of Elanthoor village in Pathanamthitta district, Shanthakumari moved to Thiruvananthapuram with her family after her husband Viswanathan Nair secured a government posting. Viswanathan Nair later served as the Law Secretary to the Kerala government, and the family lived in Thiruvananthapuram for many years.
Following health complications, including a reported stroke, Shanthakumari was later shifted to her son’s home in Ernakulam, where she spent her final days.
A Mother Who Shaped a Legend
Those close to Mohanlal have often spoken about the profound bond he shared with his mother. Over the years, the actor repeatedly credited Shanthakumari as a pillar of strength and inspiration behind his journey — from his early struggles to becoming one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated actors.
Earlier this year, after receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Mohanlal had made it a point to meet his mother. On Mother’s Day, he also shared an old photograph with her, offering fans a rare glimpse into their deeply personal relationship.
The affection wasn’t limited to him alone — members of the film fraternity, too, held Shanthakumari in high regard, recognising the quiet role she played in shaping Mohanlal’s values and resilience.
Family and Final Rites
Shanthakumari is survived by Mohanlal, her younger son. She had earlier lost her elder son Pyarelal in 2000 — a tragedy that deeply affected the family.
Reports suggest that her mortal remains will be taken to Thiruvananthapuram later in the day for the final rites.
Mohanlal on the Work Front
On the professional side, Mohanlal was last seen in Vrusshabha, which released in theatres on December 25. However, for now, the focus remains firmly on personal loss, as the actor navigates one of the most difficult moments of his life.
Final Words
Behind Mohanlal’s towering legacy lies a lifetime of quiet support from a mother who believed in him long before the world did. As condolences pour in from fans and colleagues, Shanthakumari is remembered not just as the mother of a superstar — but as a woman whose strength and values left a lasting imprint on one of Indian cinema’s finest actors.
