Andy Serkis’ long-gestating animated adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm has officially found its U.S. distributor. Angel has acquired theatrical rights to the all-star feature and will release it wide on May 1, 2026—marking a major push for the Utah-based company, which rebranded from Angel Studios after going public in 2025.

The film, produced by Aniventure (Adam Nagle & Dave Rosenbaum) and Imaginarium Productions (Jonathan Cavendish), features animation from Cinesite and made its world premiere earlier this year at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

🐷 A Powerful New Take on Orwell — “Never More Relevant,” Says Serkis

Serkis, who has long championed the adaptation and directs from a script by Nicholas Stoller, framed the film as both timely and urgent:

“Orwell’s Animal Farm has never felt more relevant. In an age where power, propaganda, and inequality shape our societies, it’s vital we remember his cautionary tale.”

The actor-director hopes the movie becomes more than entertainment:

“My hope is that audiences walk away moved, thoughtful, and inspired to stand up for the values that matter.”

Serkis also lends his voice to the film, playing Mr. Jones and Randolph the Rooster.

⭐ A Voice Cast Packed With Heavy Hitters

The adaptation boasts an ensemble uncommon for an animated political allegory:

  • Seth Rogen as Napoleon
  • Glenn Close as Freida Pilkington
  • Woody Harrelson as Boxer
  • Kieran Culkin as Squealer
  • Gaten Matarazzo as Lucky
  • Laverne Cox as Snowball
  • Jim Parsons as Carl
  • Kathleen Turner as Benjamin
  • Iman Vellani as piglets Puff and Tammy
  • Andy Serkis as Mr. Jones & Randolph

It’s one of the most eclectic, prestigious lineups for any animated film slated for 2026.

🎬 Angel’s Confidence: “A Mirror Held Up to Our World”

Angel’s executive VP of theatrical and brand development, Brandon Purdie, praised the adaptation’s emotional scope:

“Andy Serkis’ visionary direction, combined with this powerhouse cast, creates a film that feels timely, urgent, and deeply human… even though the protagonists might be pigs, donkeys, and horses.”

He called Animal Farm a story that reflects today’s world, not just Orwell’s satire of the 1940s.

Aniventure CEO Adam Nagle added that Angel’s audience-driven reach was key in securing the deal:

“Their unique connection with audiences… ensures this story will get in front of as many people as possible.”

🐴 Final Words

With Serkis at the helm, an ensemble loaded with Oscar nominees and fan favorites, and a fresh political lens on an enduring classic, Animal Farm looks set to be one of 2026’s most talked-about animated releases. Angel’s acquisition gives it a wide platform—one that promises both mainstream visibility and passionate conversation.
