Indian and South Korean entertainment industries have been growing closer over the last few years, but major on-screen collaborations between artists from both countries still remain relatively rare. That is why every new crossover project attracts attention, especially among young audiences who have embraced Korean dramas, films, and music alongside Indian content. One such project is Jeju Olle, an upcoming Korean romantic musical that marks an important chapter in Anushka Sen’s career.
Fresh from completing the film’s shoot on South Korea’s picturesque Jeju Island, the 23-year-old actor is celebrating what she describes as a memorable and deeply personal experience. For Sen, the project is not only her first Korean film but also her first commercial feature film, making it a milestone she is unlikely to forget anytime soon.
Why Jeju Olle Means So Much to Anushka Sen
Speaking about the film, Anushka Sen described Jeju Olle as a story filled with emotion, healing, and self-discovery. The actor revealed that the project instantly felt special because of both its subject matter and the opportunity to work in a completely different entertainment industry.
“Jeju Olle” is a beautiful romantic musical full of love, friendship and rediscovery. This is a very special project for me because it’s my first commercial film and it just happens to be a Korean one.”
The film follows Alisha Sen, an Indian singer and actor who travels to Jeju Island while dealing with the emotional aftermath of losing her sister. During her journey, she crosses paths with Sunwoo, a singer-songwriter who has chosen to step away from the spotlight and isolate himself from the entertainment world. As the story unfolds, the two characters gradually find comfort, understanding, and connection in each other’s company.
According to Sen, their relationship does not begin smoothly. “It all starts with a misunderstanding. But then you see how they grow as individuals and their bond.”
The storyline reflects themes that have become increasingly popular in both Indian and Korean storytelling, where personal healing and emotional growth often take center stage alongside romance.
Building a Friendship Beyond Language Barriers
One of the most talked-about aspects of the project is Sen’s collaboration with Korean actor Kang Hyung Seok, known for his work in popular dramas including Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha and Love in Contract. While language differences could have easily become a challenge during filming, Sen says the experience turned into one of the most rewarding parts of the production.
The actor spoke warmly about her co-star and the effort both of them made to communicate effectively. Rather than relying entirely on translators, they actively worked on learning each other’s languages throughout filming. Sen revealed that she enrolled in Korean language classes while Kang Hyung Seok simultaneously improved his English skills.
“There are no words that can express my gratitude and how happy I am to be able to work with the team of ‘Jeju Olle.’ I call Kang Hyung-nim. When we first met, we wondered how we would communicate. He speaks a little English, but he also learned so much and took English classes every single day, and I was taking Korean classes so that we could speak to one another.”
The experience became even more meaningful because Sen was already familiar with his work before joining the project. She admitted that she had watched several of his dramas and considered herself a fan long before they shared screen space together.
The growing popularity of Korean entertainment in India has created a generation of viewers who are deeply invested in K-dramas and Korean actors. Sen’s admiration for her co-star reflects just how connected the two entertainment cultures have become in recent years.
Life on Jeju Island and Family Support
Beyond filming, Sen says one of her favorite memories from the project was getting the opportunity to explore Jeju Island itself. South Korea’s labor regulations, including the country’s structured 52-hour workweek system, gave cast members more time to experience the island and spend time together away from the cameras.
That balance between work and personal life helped strengthen friendships among the cast and crew. For an actor working abroad for an extended period, those moments often become just as important as the scenes filmed on set.
Adding to the emotional significance of the project was the presence of her parents during the shoot. Sen revealed that having them by her side during such a major career moment made the experience even more meaningful. Her parents have witnessed every stage of her journey, from her early days as a child artist to her current international opportunities.
“They were happy and emotional at the same time. They have seen my journey up close. They’ve supported me and seen me grow as a person and an actress. This is just the beginning, and I have a long way to go, but without their support, this wouldn’t have been possible.”
The comments highlight a side of success that often goes unnoticed. While international projects can bring recognition and new opportunities, they are frequently built on years of effort, family support, and gradual career growth.
A Growing Bridge Between Indian and Korean Entertainment
Jeju Olle arrives at a time when Korean content enjoys unprecedented popularity across India. Streaming platforms have helped Korean dramas and films find large audiences in the country, while K-pop continues to attract millions of dedicated fans. At the same time, Korean production companies have shown increasing interest in collaborating with Indian talent and exploring stories that connect audiences across Asia.
For Anushka Sen, the project represents more than just another acting role. It places her among a small but growing group of Indian artists working directly within the Korean entertainment ecosystem. Reports have also linked the actor to another Korean project titled Asia, though details about that production remain limited.
For now, her focus remains firmly on Jeju Olle. While filming has wrapped, Sen still has several weeks of post-production commitments before returning to Mumbai. The film’s official release date has not yet been announced, but she expects the romantic musical to premiere before the end of the year.
As audiences continue embracing stories that cross cultural and geographical boundaries, projects like Jeju Olle could become increasingly common. For Anushka Sen, however, this first Korean film will likely remain one of the most memorable steps in her career, opening the door to new possibilities while connecting two entertainment industries that rarely share the spotlight.
