Being the child of a Bollywood superstar may seem like an advantage from the outside, but Tina Ahuja says her experience in the industry has often been quite different. The actress, who made her debut with Second Hand Husband in 2015, recently opened up about the hurdles she encountered while trying to establish herself as an actor. According to Tina, one of the biggest challenges wasn’t competition or lack of opportunities, but the assumptions people made about her before even meeting her.
Speaking exclusively to Zoom, Tina reflected on the early days of her career and revealed that many filmmakers and casting directors were reluctant to approach her because she is the daughter of veteran actor Govinda. While star kids are often accused of having an easier path in the industry, Tina says she found herself battling perceptions that had little to do with her actual personality or work ethic.
Tina Ahuja Reveals Why Casting Directors Kept Their Distance
Looking back at her journey, Tina shared that many industry professionals had already formed opinions about her without giving her a chance. She explained that some people believed she would not be willing to audition or participate in look tests like other aspiring actors. There was also a belief that working with her could bring unnecessary complications because of her famous family background.
“The only challenge I faced was that a lot of filmmakers and casting directors, were always very reluctant. Because they had this pre-assumption about me that she would never give a look test, or she would never come for an audition or something like that. And what if Govinda ji comes on set and creates a problem? They were reluctant to cast me,” Tina said.
The actress admitted that these assumptions were frustrating because they did not reflect reality. According to Tina, there was never any truth to those concerns, yet they still affected the opportunities that came her way. She believes people often judged her based on who her father was instead of evaluating her as an individual trying to build her own career.
“But jab ki aisa kuch tha hi nahi. That was the only difficulty I faced. I think with time, hopefully I know that will also wave off,” she added.
Reality Show With Sunita Ahuja Turned Out to Be a Bigger Challenge Than Expected
Apart from acting projects and music videos, Tina recently appeared alongside her mother Sunita Ahuja in Maa Hai Na, a reality series hosted by Shilpa Shetty. While viewers got to see the mother-daughter duo share the screen together, Tina revealed that saying yes to the project was far from an easy decision.
The actress confessed that stepping into the reality television space felt unfamiliar and intimidating. Unlike scripted projects where actors perform a role, reality shows require participants to be themselves in front of the camera. For Tina, who has spent considerable time working behind the scenes as well, the experience came with its own set of surprises.
“It wasn’t easy to do it with mom. Aisa kuch bhi nahi tha. I think the most difficult thing was that I don’t even know ‘c’ of cooking. And for a person like me, who’s working a lot behind the camera, to get into the whole thing in front was also a big shocker,” she shared.
What made the decision even more unexpected was that she had never imagined herself participating in a show alongside her mother. Tina revealed that her initial reaction was shock rather than excitement when the opportunity first came her way. However, the encouragement she received from Sunita Ahuja and producers Neeti and Preeti Simoes eventually convinced her to take the leap.
Tina Praises Shilpa Shetty’s Warm Nature
During the conversation, Tina also spoke warmly about Shilpa Shetty, who hosts Maa Hai Na. Having interacted with Shilpa both professionally and personally over the years, Tina said she has always admired the actress for her kindness and grounded nature.
The actress recalled working with Shilpa behind the camera and also witnessing her interactions with Govinda during previous collaborations. According to Tina, what stands out most about Shilpa is the consistency of her personality, regardless of the environment or situation.
“I have worked with Shilpa ji behind the camera, and also with Dad (Govinda) when she’s done projects with him. You can’t take away the fact that ek insaan ka nature hi itna kind aur sweet hai.,” Tina said.
Over the years, Tina Ahuja has steadily explored different avenues within the entertainment industry, from films and music videos to reality television. While her journey may not have unfolded exactly as people expected, her latest comments offer a glimpse into the lesser-known challenges that can come with carrying a famous surname. As she continues to build her own identity in the industry, Tina appears focused on letting her work speak louder than the assumptions that once followed her.
