With just days to go before its February 13 release, O Romeo is quietly turning into one of the most talked-about romantic dramas of the season. Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and led by Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri, the film already boasts a packed ensemble.
But the real surprise? Two of its supporting stars reportedly chose to work on the film without charging a fee.
The Commitment That Stood Out
Vikrant Massey and Tamannaah Bhatia agreed to be part of O Romeo pro bono, according to Bhardwaj.
Speaking about Vikrant, the filmmaker shared that the actor had committed to the project years ago — long before his career skyrocketed with 12th Fail. Even after becoming one of the most respected performers of his generation, Vikrant reportedly honoured that old promise when approached again.
The director revealed that Vikrant credited Bhardwaj’s Maqbool as the film that inspired him to enter cinema in the first place. For him, this appearance was a tribute. He shot for nearly nine days.
That’s not a cameo energy. That’s gratitude energy.
Tamannaah’s Extended Shoot
Tamannaah’s involvement is equally interesting. Though her role is said to be brief, Bhardwaj described it as pivotal to a major plot turn in the story. She reportedly signed on immediately despite the production’s budget constraints — and ended up shooting for nearly 12 days, more than initially scheduled.
Not just that, she participated in workshops and rehearsals to fully inhabit the layered character.
For a film industry often driven by star fees and commercial numbers, this kind of collaboration feels rare.
Bhardwaj & Shahid: A Creative Reunion
O Romeo also marks Vishal Bhardwaj’s third collaboration with Shahid Kapoor after Kaminey and Haider — both critically acclaimed and considered among Shahid’s strongest performances.
That history alone raises expectations. Bhardwaj and Shahid together usually mean intensity, layered characters, and morally complex storytelling.
What Is O Romeo About?
While the makers haven’t officially confirmed it, the film reportedly draws from the life of Hussain Ustara — a Mumbai gangster whose story appears in Mafia Queens of Mumbai by journalist-author Hussain Zaidi.
The narrative is said to blend romance with crime, set against the backdrop of Mumbai’s underworld politics. If that’s the case, expect Bhardwaj’s signature Shakespearean undertones, emotional depth, and morally grey characters.
The ensemble cast also includes:
- Disha Patani
- Avinash Tiwary
- Farida Jalal
- Nana Patekar
(A stacked lineup, to say the least.)
Final Words
In an industry where budgets often dominate conversations, stories like this stand out.
Vikrant Massey honouring an old promise. Tamannaah Bhatia committing beyond expectation. A director known for artistic conviction reuniting with one of his finest collaborators.
Whether O Romeo turns into a box-office success or a slow-burning cult favourite, one thing is clear — this film already carries the weight of passion behind the scenes.
And sometimes, that’s what truly shows up on screen.
