Even before its release, Ghooskhor Pandat has landed in the middle of a political storm. The upcoming Netflix film, starring Manoj Bajpayee as a corrupt cop, is facing sharp backlash over its title — and now a senior political voice has joined the criticism.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak has publicly condemned the film, alleging that the industry is targeting Indian culture and, specifically, the Brahmin community.
🗣️ “Highly Reprehensible,” Says UP Deputy CM
Speaking to the media on Friday, Pathak expressed strong objection to the title. He said the way sections of the film industry are portraying Indian traditions and communities is unacceptable and added that such films should not be released to the public.
The controversy revolves around the word “ghooskhor,” meaning someone who takes bribes, being paired with “Pandat” — a term associated with Brahmin priests. Critics argue the title paints an entire community in a negative light.
An FIR has reportedly been filed at Hazratganj Police Station against producer Neeraj Pandey and members of his production team. Film bodies like the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) have also criticised the title, calling it divisive.
🎬 What the Makers Are Saying
Neeraj Pandey has responded to the uproar, clarifying that the film is not directed against any community. According to him, the title refers to a colloquial nickname assigned to the lead character and is not meant as a slur.
In a conciliatory move, the team has begun pulling down promotional material while acknowledging that the title may have hurt sentiments.
Lead actor Manoj Bajpayee also addressed the controversy on his official social media account. He stated that he respects the emotions of those who felt offended and emphasised that the story focuses on a flawed individual’s journey toward self-realisation — not on targeting any particular group.
“When something you are part of causes hurt to some people, it makes you pause and listen,” he wrote, striking a measured tone.
⚖️ Cinema, Culture & Sensitivities
This isn’t the first time a film’s title has sparked political debate. In recent years, several projects have faced pushback over religious or caste references, reflecting the increasingly sensitive intersection between cinema and identity politics.
For streaming platforms like Netflix, such controversies raise larger questions about creative freedom versus cultural responsibility. While filmmakers argue for narrative space, political voices often demand stricter accountability.
💬 Final Words
Right now, Ghooskhor Pandat stands at a crossroads. What was meant to be a character-driven story about corruption has turned into a larger conversation about representation and respect.
Whether the makers choose to modify the title or stand by their creative choice remains to be seen. But one thing is clear — this debate has moved far beyond a film and into the broader dialogue about cinema’s role in shaping public perception.
