Few Bollywood films in recent years have generated the kind of conversation that Dhurandhar did. From its explosive action sequences and political undertones to its record-breaking box office run, Aditya Dhar’s spy thriller became much more than just a movie franchise. Alongside the praise and commercial success, however, came a flood of rumours and theories, some of which were far more dramatic than anything seen on screen.
One of the most persistent claims suggested that the script of Dhurandhar had somehow originated from the Prime Minister’s Office. While the speculation continued to circulate online for months, actor Rakesh Bedi has now directly addressed the rumour and offered his own humorous response to the bizarre theory.
Rakesh Bedi Reacts to the PMO Script Rumour
During a recent public event, Rakesh Bedi opened up about his experience working on Dhurandhar and reflected on some of the stories that emerged after the film became a blockbuster. According to the actor, he was surprised by the number of conspiracy theories surrounding the project, particularly one claiming that the screenplay had been supplied by the Prime Minister’s Office.
Speaking at News18’s Amrit Ratna 2026 event, Bedi dismissed the speculation while using one of the film’s funniest moments to make his point.
“When the film became a hit, some people claimed that the script of Dhurandhar came straight from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). I said, ‘Tell me, who in the PMO could possibly write a line like this?'”
The remark drew laughter from the audience and highlighted how unrealistic he found the claim. The actor suggested that once a film reaches a certain level of popularity, people often begin attaching all kinds of theories to it, regardless of how unlikely they may sound.
The Comedy That Almost Didn’t Make It Into the Film
While Dhurandhar became known primarily for its intense action, espionage themes and high-stakes drama, Rakesh Bedi’s character provided occasional moments of relief amid the tension. Interestingly, those lighter moments were not originally part of the plan.
The veteran actor revealed that when he first read the screenplay, he found it extremely serious and emotionally heavy. Believing that audiences might benefit from occasional comic relief, he approached director Aditya Dhar with the idea of introducing some humor into his scenes.
According to Bedi, the director was not immediately convinced.
“Initially, he was a little reluctant, but as we progressed, he started enjoying it too, and I began enjoying it as well,” he shared.
That creative collaboration eventually led to some memorable moments in the film. One dialogue in particular became a talking point among audiences and gained popularity on social media after the film’s release. The line wasn’t originally part of the script and reportedly emerged during filming, further demonstrating how spontaneous performances can sometimes create a movie’s most memorable scenes.
Dhurandhar Became a Box Office Juggernaut
When the first Dhurandhar film arrived in cinemas, few could have predicted the scale of its success. Directed by Aditya Dhar and headlined by Ranveer Singh, the spy thriller quickly transformed into one of the biggest Hindi film events of recent years.
The franchise launched with its first installment on December 5 and continued its momentum with Dhurandhar: The Revenge, which hit theatres on March 19. Releasing two chapters within a relatively short period proved to be a winning strategy, keeping audience interest alive and expanding the story’s universe at an aggressive pace.
The first film alone reportedly crossed the ₹1300 crore mark worldwide, establishing itself among the highest-grossing Indian films ever released. Its success helped elevate the franchise into a major cinematic property and strengthened Aditya Dhar’s reputation as one of Bollywood’s most successful commercial filmmakers.
The blend of espionage, underworld politics, large-scale action and emotional storytelling connected strongly with audiences across multiple regions.
A Powerful Ensemble Supported Ranveer Singh
Although Ranveer Singh’s portrayal of Hamza Ali Mazari, also known as Jameel Jamali, remained at the center of the story, the franchise benefited from a strong ensemble cast. Several established actors contributed to building the world of Dhurandhar, helping create a layered narrative that stretched across two films.
Akshaye Khanna played the menacing Rehman Dakait, while Danish Pandor appeared as Uzair Baloch. Sanjay Dutt took on the role of SP Chaudhary Aslam and R. Madhavan portrayed Ajay Sanyal. Alongside them, Rakesh Bedi’s performance brought a unique energy that balanced some of the darker aspects of the story.
The franchise also featured contributions from Gaurav Gera and Sara Arjun, while Yami Gautam made a special appearance that generated significant attention among audiences.
Following its successful theatrical run, the original film eventually made its way to Netflix. Meanwhile, Dhurandhar: The Revenge expanded its digital reach through both JioHotstar and Netflix, where viewers were later offered the much-discussed Raw & Undekha and international uncut versions.
Even months after release, conversations around the franchise continue to dominate entertainment discussions. And judging by Rakesh Bedi’s latest comments, some of those conversations have become almost as entertaining as the films themselves.
