Anil Sharma Opens Up on Ambitious Period Epic ‘Arjun Naga’, Shares Major Update on Gadar 3

More than 40 years after entering the film industry, veteran filmmaker Anil Sharma continues to back the kind of big-screen storytelling that has shaped his career. From crowd-pleasers like Hukumat and Tehelka to the blockbuster success of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha and its record-smashing sequel Gadar 2, Sharma has always remained closely connected to mass audiences. Now, the director is preparing for another large-scale venture, one that he believes carries the same kind of potential as some of his most celebrated films.

The filmmaker has confirmed that work is already underway on his upcoming period drama Arjun Naga, a project he describes as one of the strongest scripts he has come across in his entire career. While details about the film are still being kept under wraps, Sharma’s confidence in the material suggests that he sees it as a major milestone in the next phase of his filmmaking journey.

Anil Sharma Calls ‘Arjun Naga’ One of His Strongest Scripts

Speaking about the project, Sharma revealed that the first schedule of filming has already been completed. The movie stars his son Utkarsh Sharma in the lead role, while reports suggest that Arjun Rampal will be seen playing the primary antagonist. However, the director has not officially unveiled the full cast yet and says those announcements will come at a later stage.

“Right now, I am working on a very big project. I have already finished my 10 to 20-day schedule. I am yet to announce the cast. The movie is called ‘Arjun Naga.’ It is a period film set on a massive scale. I would like to say that very few times in life one gets a script so solid. Just like ‘Hukumat,’ ‘Tehelka,’ ‘Gadar,’ ‘Arjun Naga’ is exactly like that and I am now working on it. I will talk about this in detail soon,” Sharma said.

The filmmaker’s comparison is noteworthy because those earlier titles played an important role in defining commercial Hindi cinema during their respective eras. By placing Arjun Naga alongside those films, Sharma is signaling that he sees the project as more than just another historical drama. The film appears to be designed as a large theatrical experience, something that aligns with the director’s long-standing belief in cinema made for the big screen rather than digital platforms.

Gadar 3 Moves Ahead as Writing Continues

While Arjun Naga remains his immediate priority, Sharma also offered an encouraging update for fans waiting to see the next chapter in the Gadar franchise. Following the extraordinary success of Gadar 2 in 2023, discussions around a third installment have remained constant, with audiences eager to know when Sunny Deol’s iconic Tara Singh would return to theatres.

According to Sharma, the development process for Gadar 3 is currently focused on building the screenplay. The team is taking its time to ensure that the story reaches a satisfactory stage before cameras begin rolling. He indicated that production could potentially begin before the end of the year if everything falls into place.

“As for ‘Gadar 3,’ we are right now working on the script and once we are satisfied and the story is blocked is when we begin production, hopefully by the end of this year,” he said.

The update will likely excite fans because Gadar 2 exceeded most trade expectations during its theatrical run. The film emerged as one of the biggest Indian box-office successes of 2023, proving that the franchise still holds enormous appeal more than two decades after the original movie arrived in cinemas.

Why Gadar Continues to Connect With Audiences

Released in 2001, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha became far more than a box-office hit. The Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel starrer turned into a cultural phenomenon, with many of its scenes, dialogues, and songs continuing to remain part of popular culture even today. The sequel’s success further demonstrated that the emotional connection audiences built with the characters never really faded.

Sharma believes the franchise’s longevity comes from its ability to stay emotionally relevant despite changing generations. Rather than focusing on trends, he says the films connect because they speak to universal emotions that continue to resonate with viewers.

“What makes pop culture? Things we like and enjoy become part of pop culture. The names have been changing over the years, people have aged, but the soul has been the same. Who is 40 years old now was 18 at some point. When ‘Gadar’ came, it managed to make space in the hearts of its audience. It has managed to stay there. The fact that it was relevant regardless of time is why it managed to stay and is still sampled to date,” Sharma explained.

His comments offer insight into how he views storytelling. For Sharma, successful films are not simply products of a particular era. Instead, they become memorable because they manage to create emotional bonds that survive long after their theatrical run ends.

‘The Filmmaker Has To Be The First Audience’

One of the most interesting aspects of Sharma’s filmmaking philosophy is his insistence on thinking like an ordinary moviegoer. While many filmmakers discuss artistic vision or creative experimentation, Sharma says he approaches every project from the perspective of someone sitting inside a packed cinema hall waiting to be entertained.

“I know what the audience wants because I am a part of the audience. I have always prioritized the audience. I never write my films like a filmmaker. I am a man sitting in a single-screen theatre, not even a multiplex. If the story excites that man sitting in the single screen, that is what makes it into my film. The filmmaker has to be the first audience,” he said.

That mindset has arguably been one of the defining characteristics of his career. Many of Sharma’s biggest hits have been built around strong emotions, larger-than-life moments, and stories designed to generate crowd reactions inside theatres. Even as viewing habits continue to evolve, he appears committed to preserving that formula.

The director also stressed that cinema ultimately belongs to the paying audience rather than the people creating it. “You make films for them to come to the cinema halls to watch your work. If you make a film thinking it is for you, why spend crores? Instead, upload it on YouTube and keep watching it,” he adds.

With Arjun Naga already moving through production and Gadar 3 steadily taking shape behind the scenes, Anil Sharma is once again betting on the theatrical experience that has defined his legacy. Whether it’s a historical epic or a long-running franchise, the filmmaker remains focused on one thing above all else — delivering stories that connect with audiences sitting in cinema halls across the country.
